Oil pulling 101

Oil pulling aka Kavalagraha, is an ancient technique for a healthy mouth and teeth. It involves swishing oil (coconut or sesame) for 15-20 minutes, first thing in the morning. Oil pulling draws out toxins from teeth and gums, balances the PH in the mouth. The texture can be kind of off putting (read gross) but I got used to it quite quickly.

WHY : When oil pulling with soothing oils, botanical and phytonutrients known for their anti-inflammatory properties and lymph stimulating nature, we offer our mouths a top-notch way to stay in vibrant health.

HOW : I use organic coconut oil, add essential oils : peppermint (refreshing+cooling) and clove (a well-known oral health ally). Tea Tree and oregano oil can be added for their powerful anti-microbial properties. My favorite recipe includes Xylitol : a natural sweetener widely used and recommend for oral health. Not only is Xylitol great at preventing cavities (research backed), but it is studied to reduce plaque formation, heal and repair tissue. And did I say it taste SWEET?

MAKE : Blend 1/2 cup room temp or melted coconut oil with 8 drops GOOD quality peppermint essential oil + 4 drops clove essential oil, 1 teaspoon of Xylitol (optional). Store in glass jar.

Swish 1 teaspoon in mouth every morning on an empty stomach, 7-20 minutes, then spit (never swallow!) in trash can (sink can get clogged from coconut oil).

I then tongue scrape (will do a post about it soon!) and brush my teeth to remove any excess oil left.
